Not sure if the TZ280 is the right fit?
The TZ280 is the entry point in the SonicWall Gen 8 TZ lineup. If you need more throughput, a higher user
count, or more concurrent VPN tunnels, the TZ380 and higher models scale up from here. Compare all
TZ series models on one page to match the right appliance to your site.
The TZ280 is the base model with 8 GbE copper ports and 2 SFP fiber uplinks. The
TZ280W adds an integrated Wi-Fi 6 (2x2, 802.11ax) radio so you can serve wireless clients directly
from the firewall without a separate access point. The TZ280P adds PoE+ ports that can power SonicWave
access points, IP phones, and other powered devices over the same cable that carries data. All three
run SonicOS 8 and support the same security service subscriptions, so the choice comes down to your
physical environment.
SonicWall rates the TZ280 for up to 1,000 SSO authenticated users. For most home
offices, small businesses, and lean branch locations in the 1 to 25 user range, it provides well more
headroom than you will ever need. If your site is growing quickly or you run heavy TLS inspection
across a larger staff, our engineers can help you evaluate whether the TZ380 or TZ480 is the better
long-term fit.
Yes. Ship the TZ280 to a remote site, plug it in, and a non-technical person on-site
can bring it online using the SonicExpress mobile app. Configuration templates and security policies
are pushed from Network Security Manager, so your central IT team handles the setup without ever
touching the device. This makes the TZ280 practical for organizations rolling out dozens of branch
locations with limited local IT staff.
SonicWall offers two primary subscription tiers. The Advanced Protection Service
Suite (APSS) covers Capture ATP with RTDMI, Gateway AV, anti-spyware, IPS, application control,
content filtering, anti-spam, DNS filtering, and cloud management with 7-day reporting. The Managed
Protection Service Suite (MPSS) steps up to a managed firewall service with 30-day advanced reporting
and analytics. Both suites include an embedded Cysurance security warranty of up to $200,000. Our team
can walk you through the right term length and bundle for your budget.
Yes. SonicWall released the TZ280 in early 2026 as the Generation 8 successor to the
Generation 7 TZ270. The TZ280 improves on the TZ270 across nearly every spec, including higher
firewall and threat prevention throughput, the updated SonicOS 8 operating system, and expanded
connectivity options. If your TZ270 subscription is approaching renewal, a Secure Upgrade Plus to the
TZ280 is the straightforward path and typically the most cost-effective way to get current hardware at
the same time.
