Link Balancers.
Maximize uptime and bandwidth with intelligent WAN load balancing.
Firewalls.com carries WAN link balancers and SD-WAN appliances from Peplink, Barracuda, and SonicWall that
aggregate multiple ISP connections into a single, resilient WAN connection. Whether you are combining cable,
fiber, LTE, and satellite links for a branch office or building a carrier-diverse connection for a data
center, our certified engineers help you design and configure a solution that keeps your network online even
when a circuit goes down.

Link Balancers at a Glance
Intelligent Load Balancing
Link balancers distribute outbound traffic across multiple ISP connections simultaneously using
configurable algorithms including round-robin, weighted distribution, session persistence, and
application-aware routing. Latency-sensitive traffic like VoIP and video conferencing can be pinned to
the lowest-latency link while bulk downloads use available bandwidth across all links, maximizing both
performance and bandwidth utilization across your entire WAN connection portfolio.
Automatic WAN Failover
Link balancers monitor the health of each WAN connection continuously using active probes and passive
traffic analysis. When a circuit degrades or fails, the appliance reroutes traffic to remaining healthy
links in sub-second timeframes, maintaining active sessions without user intervention or dropped VoIP
calls. Unlike a single-link firewall where a circuit failure means no internet access, a link balancer
keeps the network online until the failed circuit recovers.
Bandwidth Aggregation
Bandwidth aggregation combines the throughput of multiple internet connections into a single logical
pipe. A site with two 100 Mbps cable circuits can achieve close to 200 Mbps of effective throughput
across concurrent sessions rather than being limited to the faster of the two individual links. Peplink
SpeedFusion technology bonds connections at the packet level for true aggregation that improves
single-session performance, not just total capacity.
SD-WAN and Cloud Integration
Modern link balancers include SD-WAN capabilities that apply application-aware routing policies to
optimize traffic to cloud platforms like Microsoft 365, Salesforce, and AWS. Rather than routing cloud
traffic through a central data center hub, SD-WAN sends it directly to the internet from each branch
over the best available link, reducing latency and improving cloud application performance without
manual policy management at each site.
Relying on a single ISP connection for business-critical operations?
A single internet circuit is a single point of failure. Adding a second link and a link balancer costs
less than most people expect and eliminates the most common cause of unplanned downtime. Our engineers
will size the right solution for your bandwidth requirements and link count.
A WAN link balancer is a network appliance that manages multiple internet connections
simultaneously, distributing traffic across them for maximum bandwidth utilization and switching to
surviving links automatically when one fails. It sits between your firewall and your ISP circuits and
is transparent to the rest of the network. The result is a more reliable, higher-capacity internet
connection than any single circuit can provide, at a fraction of the cost of dedicated leased-line
redundancy.
Failover means keeping a backup link idle until the primary fails, then switching to
it. This provides redundancy but wastes the backup circuit's capacity during normal operation. Load
balancing uses all available links simultaneously, distributing traffic across them for maximum
throughput and still failing over to remaining links when one goes down. Most link balancers support
both modes, and the right configuration depends on whether you are paying for both circuits and want
to use both actively or keeping one as a cold standby.
Yes. Link balancers are designed to work with heterogeneous WAN connections including
cable, fiber, DSL, 4G LTE, 5G cellular, satellite, and dedicated T1 or Ethernet circuits. Using
diverse connection types from different ISPs is actually a best practice for resilience, because a
fiber cut that takes down one provider typically does not affect a cellular backup on a different
carrier's tower. Peplink appliances include built-in cellular modems on many models for exactly this
scenario.
SD-WAN (Software-Defined WAN) builds on link balancing by adding application-aware
routing intelligence. A basic link balancer distributes traffic based on connection weight and health.
An SD-WAN solution identifies specific applications and routes each one over the WAN path that best
suits its requirements, sending VoIP over the lowest-latency link, Microsoft 365 traffic directly to
the internet, and bulk file transfers across whichever links have spare capacity. SD-WAN also
centralizes WAN policy management across multiple sites from a single dashboard.
Yes. A link balancer manages WAN connectivity and traffic distribution but does not
provide security inspection, threat prevention, or content filtering. A firewall is still required to
protect your network from inbound and outbound threats on all of the WAN links managed by the
balancer. In most deployments, the link balancer sits between the ISP circuits and the firewall's WAN
interface, presenting a single aggregated connection to the firewall while handling all circuit
management invisibly.
